Here are just a few questions to think about when you enter into a brand new relationship”

HOW DO YOU APPROACH THE DATING WORLD IF YOU HAVE AN ILLNESS?
WHEN DO YOU DISCLOSE YOUR ILLNESS?
DO YOU HAVE EXPECTATIONS OF YOUR PARTNER WHEN YOU ARE DATING WITH AN ILLNESS?
WHEN TO PROCEED WITH A POTENTIAL PARTNER AND HOW DO YOU FIND OUT IF THEY ARE OK WITH YOUR ILLNESS?

When dating with an illness one thing to pay attention to is your emotions. Dating itslef can be stressfull, let alone having to worry about how potential partners will receive this information.

Here are some emotions and potential triggers to pay attention to if you have an illness and are dating:

  • ANGER
  • PAIN
  • DISAPPOINTMENT
  • SHAME
  • BLAME
  • GUILT
  • LOW SELF ESTEEM AND CONFIDENCE

What can you do to ensure you have great relationships even though you have a serious illness:

Don’t worry about what others think - release the anxiety that may come from worrying about what this potential partner may think - You do not have to be ashamed of or feel like you have to make up for your illness especially while dating.

Limit expectations - It’s always great when the dream you have for a relationship works out as planned. But what happens when it doesn’t. Don’t give up on your dream, there is someone out there for everyone and your person is waiting to love you through it all. Don’t get stuck on what you expect to happen. Let them love you!

Educate those who enter your life - When someone enters into a new relationship they may not receptive to dating someone with an illness because they don’t have enough education. Maybe they have never had to be with someone who had an illness before and they just need more information. It is O.K. to share a little bit of your story with them so that they can support you. If this is your Powermate they will not have a problem.

Also,

Don’t be hard on yourself - It can be tough when you are dating for love and trying to appear perfect, or like someone else. Present yourself as the full package that you are and the right person will be right there to love all of you. You don’t have to show up perfect you just have to show up ready for your Powermate love!

Put your health first - Your health is your health and your Powermate will understand that every day will not be perfect and will not be the same. One day you might be great and have all the energy in the world, and the next you may be feeling low. This comes with the territory when someone has an illness and is also dating. It is O.K., focus on being the best you and feeling your greatest each and every day. If you need to take time, take time, your Powermate showed up to date differently and your illness will not stop them.

Be patient - Yes, everything happens on its own time. If the love you seek had not shown up yet, take the time to focus on loving you. Being single is not a punishment. It is a time that should be cherished.

Trust - Trust God, Trust yourself, and Trust the process.
